John Harbaugh's last two trips to California to face the Chargers: 2012: "Hey, diddle diddle, Ray Rice up the middle" on fourth-and-29 2018: Team announces at least another year as Ravens coach and a possible contract extension
The Ravens could be out of the playoff race for the fourth straight season by Sunday night, but coach John Harbaugh's job is safe. bsun.md/2T2beE4 (via @ChildsWalker )
One interesting detail from the Ravens' indoor practice Thursday: Team president Dick Cass watched the team for a bit during the open portion of the workout. The team usually practices outside, but Cass hasn't been a sideline spectator like he was Thursday.
On Friday, the Ravens recommitted to John Harbaugh as coach.. But before a contract extension is signed, both sides will have to decide on the staff around him. Protecting Lamar Jackson is just as important as maximizing his talents. bsun.md/2PYP5EG
The Titans trail early vs. the Redskins, and a loss would really help the Ravens. Even with a loss to the Chargers, the Ravens would likely get the No. 6 seed if they beat Cleveland in Week 17 *and* the Titans lose today and beat the Colts in Week 17. bsun.md/2rNRE2L
Ravens inactives: Robert Griffin III, Jordan Lasley, Tim Williams, Alex Lewis, Buck Allen, Zach Sieler and Patrick Ricard. But Nick Boyle, Matthew Judon and Anthony Levine Sr., all questionable, will play.
With the Titans' win, the Ravens' road to the playoffs gets even tougher. Their wild-card odds have dropped from ~11 percent to ~6 percent, according to the @UpshotNYT playoff simulator. With a win vs. the Chargers, they rise to ~17 percent.
The Titans' win moves the Ravens one result closer to their doomsday scenario. With a loss to the Chargers tonight and wins by the Colts and Steelers tomorrow, the Ravens will be eliminated from playoff contention.
The Ravens still have two routes to the playoffs: 1. AFC North: Ravens must win 1 more game than Pittsburgh over final 2 weeks. 2. Wild card: Ravens *could* win strength-of-victory tiebreaker vs. Colts at 9-7, but they'd need a win tonight. Titans would lose tiebreaker to Ravens.
And on the very first play of the game, Brandon Carr comes down with an interception along the sideline. Philip Rivers underthrew Mike Williams, who had a half-step on a stumbling Carr.
Ravens can't punch it in from the 6-yard line. Lamar Jackson's back-shoulder throw to Michael Crabtree gets broken up. He would've had a better chance with a higher-arcing ball.
Hayden Hurst with a nice at-the-knees catch, and buddy Mark Andrews gives him a couple yards downfield with some nice blocking. Ravens already in Chargers territory.
Tucker misses field goal but running game is going well especially up the middle. Problem is that the Ravens can't afford mistakes because Jackson ineffective as long range passer.
The Ravens have completely dominated this game, so 3-0 feels like the kind of missed opportunity they can't afford against a team as good as the Chargers.
Ravens end the first quarter with a 142-14 advantage in yards and 6-0 advantage in first downs. But they lead only 3-0 and have third-and-long coming up.
Philip Rivers is a second-half quarterback, as he showed against the Chiefs. The Ravens need to put some points up before he starts to get things figured out. #ravens
The best thing going for the Ravens right now is that the officials have gotten under Rivers' skin. He's an excitable guy, so maybe he'll make some more mistakes. #ravens
On this series Ravens need to score a touchdown and take advantage of good field position. Meanwhile, Chargers hurting themselves with penalties, especially holding.
